Legacy Plot Reservation Management Program

Council's Legacy Plot Reservation Management Policy aims to provide a simple and respectful way to manage long-held cemetery plot reservations.

The policy is not about taking plots away from families who still need them. Instead, it helps Council identify plots that may no longer be required and gives reservation holders or their families the opportunity to either keep or voluntarily return them.

Around 225 unused plots, which were reserved more than 25 years ago, have been identified across the Tewantin, Cooroy and Pomona cemeteries.

If you have a reserved burial or ashes plot that is no longer needed, Council encourages you to contact our Cemeteries team. Returning an unused plot can help make space available for other local families.

If you've been contacted by Council about a reserved burial or ashes plot or if you have a reserved plot you no longer need, please download and complete the Notice to Retain or Relinquish Burial or Ashes Plot(PDF, 158KB) form.

The policy helps Council keep cemetery records up to date and make the best use of available cemetery land, particularly at Tewantin Cemetery, which is at capacity for new traditional burials.
